How to make Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients

  • 300g spaghetti
  • 300g ground beef (minced beef)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 400g canned chopped tomatoes
  • 200ml beef or vegetable broth
  • 30ml tomato paste
  • 30ml olive oil
  • 10g fresh basil leaves, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • 5g dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Method

  1. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, diced carrot, and diced celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the canned chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, beef or vegetable broth, chopped basil, and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently, uncovered, for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  7. Serve the spaghetti bolognese hot, topped with a generous spoonful of the meat sauce, and garnished with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese.
  8. Enjoy your delicious homemade spaghetti bolognese with a side of garlic bread or a simple green salad.

Feel free to customize your spaghetti bolognese by adding additional vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms, or by using a combination of ground meats such as pork and veal.
